Carol Nunan
Carol Nunan is an artist printmaker whose studio - a converted barn on the
edge of Hexham, in rural Northumberland - is the place where she creates
her original handmade prints and teaches printmaking workshops.
Carol's work is rooted in the landscape. Her inspiration comes from cultivated and
wild flowers; from iconic castles, local landmarks and the archeological
history within the landscape.
Carol works primarily with monotype and collagraph printmaking media.
Printed by hand, each print is unique. Her fascination lies in experimenting
with printmaking media and alternative colour palettes to reflect the
changing landscape.
Her most recent work brings her use of monotype and
collagraphs together in the one print using natural plant material as stencils.
Her use of colour and her quest to constantly reinvent her practice owes
much to the diverse cultural influences of her African and Irish upbringing.
Born in Ireland, Carol grew up in Zambia before returning to Ireland where
she graduated from the National College of Art & Design in Dublin. She
pursued a career as a graphic designer, in Ireland and South Africa before
emigrating to the UK when she was appointed to a position of design
manager at Procter & Gamble in Newcastle. Northumberland became her
adopted home and she has lived in Hexham since 1989 - the last 17 as a
professional artist.
