The Jetty Gallery
Peter Maclellan
"I was born in Oban and I attended Oban High School where my favourite subjects were art and engineering drawing. I began painting with oils when I was ten-years-old, after being given a set of oil paints.
I continued to paint with oils while taking an interest in other techniques. I developed an interest in auto paints while working as a paint mixer for a local garage and I consequently began experimenting with airbrush work. I was a hot glass worker with Caithness Glass for a few years, working mostly as a glass gatherer. I then moved to London and set up a small garage in Bethnal Green where I custom painted motorcycles and occasionally did some sign-writing. After returning to Oban I worked as a self-employed sign-maker. I began working with stained glass, initially as a hobby, while continuing to paint whenever I could.
I have no formal art training beyond high school art classes. I work as a janitor in a local primary school; the extra holidays allow me more time to paint. Having grown up by the sea, I’m particularly interested in painting seascapes. I like the changing light and atmosphere of the Atlantic coast, but I enjoy watching the sea wherever I am."
